I got an optical mouse and shrugged off the yoke of mousepads forever! LIVE FREE!
I still use a mousepad so I don't scratch up my desk (any more than everything else has), and the pad offers enough friction to feel in control.
Hell, if anyone wants to find me a mousepad too, let me know. I like foam covered with a fabric top. I can only find those plastic shit slabs nowadays.
