I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that Usama bin Laden is actually in Pakistan. I don't think there's any doubt. The reason the trail has gone "cold" has to do with not pursuinng him into Pakistan. It's a tricky situation because we're not really in a position to cause a stir by sending U.S. troops into Pakistan to get him, but it's abundantly clear that the Paki govt doesn't intend to get him themselves. Further, it's highly likely that bin Laden has been able to stay in Pakistan with the support of the ISI, which he's had for well over a decade.

Musharaf can't control the ISI, and he knows if he tries to reign them in it will be the end of him. So he's content to let things stand as they are. So the U.S. must either decide to not pursue bin Laden in Pakistan as it has done for the last several years, or create a serious riff by invading Pakistan.
