I had this idea too a long time ago. Designing a gigantic 2D game with lot more of maps would just take longer then making a short shitty 3D game that all the Sonic dorks would buy anyway.
I mean even when they still do 2D (Sonic Advance, New Super Mario Bros. and Yoshi's Island 2) they are just as long as the originals (if not shorter). Not to mention the Sonic Advance games suck really bad.
It's a great idea, but no one is going to do it.
