Celibacy refers either to being unmarried or to
sexual abstinence. Celibacy is sometimes used as a synonym for "
abstinence" or "
chastity." A
vow of celibacy is a promise not to enter into
marriage or engage in
sexual intercourse. The term
involuntary celibacy has recently appeared to describe a chronic, unwilling state of celibacy.
