Well, it's already done some damage to his hearing, perhaps with earplugs he wouldn't be able to hear anything at all? Who knows. But I think that what's done is done and bringing back a band after a ton of time isn't always a good idea. Look at Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant just can't hit those notes anymore and it just sounds weird.
