I thought so too but then I realized that if you drop the key (it's a key right? It's been like eight years since I played Mario 2) it flies away and gives you some time to make progress before it starts stalking you again. Apparently the stupid thing doesn't really care if you have the key or not, it just doesn't want you to touch it. In the mean time you can use it as a weapon.
