And I gotta say that that analogy doesn't hold at all, because they're not saying the NES games are bad by today's standards -- they're bad by the NES's standards.

No kidding. This lack of reviewing is what made the rental business much bigger than it was. Back in the days of carts, you basically had to rent or you would never even use your console. Buying games was a pain in the ass and when you occasionally got one, you better be sure it was something you liked or otherwise you had a very expensive paperweight.
It's one thing to thank the reviewers and the internet, but when Sony started putting out 'Greatest Hits' for less than half the price, that was a true godsend.
