Why do people hate liberals?

I really have trouble understanding the motives behind overly conservative people who say liberals should be impaled through the head by rusty spears (actual quote from a person at my school.)

I can't see the reasoning behind it. "Well, gee, this person wants fair treatment and equal rights for homosexuals, he should die!" What the hell is so wrong with that? Maybe one of you can explain it to me.
