It should be noted that although the show refers to Sheindlin as a judge, neither she nor Petri Hawkins-Byrd is acting as an actual court officer on the show. She is acting as an arbiter, and Byrd is acting as a private security guard.
There's nothing wrong with self-preservation. I just think it's funny how, in most people, the instinctive "screw you guys, I'm going home" thing kicks in immediately when there's an emergency. Some people are leaders in emergencies, some people are frightened sheep, and some people are long-gone.
