when a bunch, okay a lot of jews get rounded up and killed during a WAR, it's a HOLOCAUST.

when the Armenians are almost wiped out by the Turks it's only GENOCIDE.

why is an atrocity on jews worse than an atrocity on any other people?

"holocaust" is actually a very precise term. Its like genocide turned into an industry. That, I think, is the most horrific thing about what went on in Europe in the 1940s.

A supposedly civilized, enlightened, Western nation could take the great advances of the Industrial Revolution, and twist them so badly.

According to the wiki, religious Jews don't particularly like the term holocaust, since it's taken from pagan Greek religious practices, they prefer the Hebrew word for calamity. The word holocaust means something like 'completly burned' in Greek, which may have something to do with why the term is used to describe the genocide against the Jews, given the industrial scale of the killings carried out in ovens and gas chambers in the concentration camps. In any event, the Holocaust is just the particular term for a particular genocide, it's not a way to categorize the genocide against the Jews as having a higher degree of importance. Like Jeanette pointed out, most genocides have particular names as well, any genocide is a significant enough event to warrant being remembered on its own for itself and not as a generic event.

Like I said, it's derived from Hebrew. It wasn't born out of Greek Paganism yadda yadda. Context is everything. The Hebrew word was Olot which didn't have a direct translation for the King James translation, but that's what they're referencing. There are lots of examples of secular uses of the word long before the Shoah, but it's origins were the appropriation of the Old Testament.

How about Shoah? Holocaust is fine....but like the term anti-semitism, there is a desire to appropriate and disarm Jews from having the ability to articulate a scary climate like what we're seeing in certain parts of the world today.
