i love Godspeed You Black Emperor and i want to listen to more bands like them.

i have tried mogwai, but i find most of mogwai's fans to be completely repugnant which effects my liking of their music.

http://www.sputnikmusic.com/bands.php?bandid=913 reviews and you can look up similar style bands.

mono
Russian Circles.
Boris's "The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked" series.

While I'm at it, I also recommend Earth and Sunn O))), but they are drone bands and not post-rock.

I do not recommend Pelican. They sucked.

I also find GYBE to be shit.

if you like godspeed you'll probably also like set fire to flames since it's pretty much the same band

if you end up listening to noob and check out don cab, i'd suggest their later stuff (what burns never returns and american don) but not their new gay reunion crap

shipping news is good sometimes, rachels is really cool and probably more like what you're looking for

the for carnation are super awesome too

i downloaded Don Caballero 2 a while ago off soulseek and never listened to it. i'm listiening to it now and i really like it.

i'm downloading Rachel's's The Sea and the Bells now. it sounds sort of like godspeed from the reviews i've read, so i'm pretty excited to hear what they sound like.

i have austrailasia on my computer but i havent listened to it in a while. i remember liking it a lot when i heard it though.

i think i had a tortoise album on my computer. i think it was one of their later ones though, and it reminded me of weird electronica for some reason. i dont remember liking it. maybe i'll download their self titled one

my friend tom downloaded a lot of a silver mt. zion on my computer over the summer. i think i deleted it though.

i'll try downloading some of these other bands once i delete some crap off my computer to make room for it all.

Better yet, go to Temporary Residence. They seem to cater a whole label of post-rock and stuff.

Not too sure if it's what you're after, but my recommendations are a few post-metal bands who put a fair deal of emphasis on atmosphere. Might not be as ambient as you'd like, but you might want to try:

Isis
Cult of Luna
Neurosis (more recent albums)
Callisto
Pelican

what, you're trying to value your ignorance as moderation? the clarification is a bit much, but not toally unecessary, as GYBE fans will likely dig mogwai (who are pretty damn great, btw), and fans of that will be into the unfortunately labeled drone metal giants SunnO))), Pita, Earth, et al.

but since the thread specifically said ambient, i would say you might like aMute a whole hell of a lot. and i second the explosions in the sky, one of the very few post rock bands who have a sense of melody thats more developed than their sense of epic crescendo-ing, and that a GOOD thing.

one thing i dont understand is why mono are great and GYBE are shit. mono revive crap that was amazing in 1999 and do absolutely nothing new with it. i really dont get their fans very much.

that's ignoring the fact these bands were appearing in every thread. boris, in bands you're embarrassed to like? earth, in a thread about dreams or some such turdery? I like sunn, but I don't think they're anything much like GYBE or mogwai. in any case, I doubt that's why AH decided to mention them.

just checked out aMute's myspace, they're pretty cool man. hit my country reminds me of thom yorke's solo stuff and bee and flower. and yeah, I agree about mono - but since were GYBE shit??

I'll second Explosions in the Sky. Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die... This album is a classic (to the extent we can say that about post rock). It sounds like the soundtrack to an epic movie about the battle between good and evil.

We all know Slint right?

Disco Inferno. If you haven't heard DI Go Pop, you haven't heard anything like it.

MONO (Japan)

God is an Astronaut. These guys are a bit more electronic.

Ulrich Schnauss. Also electronic. They get lumped in with shoegazers a lot.

Kinski. They rock like an instrumental Sonic Youth.

A Whisper in the Noise

sunn might be one degree too far to really be the first thing to pop in yr head when mentioning GYBE, having other bands like kinski, EITS, polmo polpo, or even 65 days of static be much closer to what they do.
but if he wants ambient, it's good to direct attention to those who know and live ambient (or drone), instead of naively messing with it as a segue to grander things, as GYBE do.
but i'm not saying they're shit at all. i was just wondering why so many mono fans talk about yanqui UXO as being tired when they're listening to an entire band who's been consistently 5 years late to everything since "one step more and you die"

speaking of polmo polpo, check out his album"like hearts swelling", rongi. it's my 5th favorite record of all time and fits exactly what you're looking for.
everything about it is golden to me.
