So about a week and a half ago my mom tells me that the local Dollar General just lost a few people and that they need someone to replace them, and that she told the clerk that she would send me down. I go down there and apply. I turn my application in the same day. No problems so far. The clerk tells me that the manager will give me a call.
Two days later I go in to check on my application at the urging of my girlfriend and mom. I go in and talk to the manager. She doesn't seem particularly enthralled to see me, but she takes my application out and puts it on top of the stack. Alright, things are looking pretty good. The manager tells me that she'll give me a call after she goes through the applications this afternoon. Alright.
Two days later I go in again and talk to the manager once more, trying to give her the impression that I really need a job. She seems kind of pissed off that I'm talking to her. She says that she'll give me a call after she goes through the applications this afternoon. Again. Right.
I decide to give it some time. Four days pass, til we reach today. I'm nervous since I haven't recieved a single call from Dollar General. Not even a "sorry, we don't need your services" call. I go in to buy some masking tape for painting our car and when I enter I notice the "Now Hiring!" sign is gone. This is bad news. I check out with my tape and ask the lady behind the counter about my application. She had been relatively cheerful until I asked, then suddenly she became very seemingly distracted and a little miffed, I guess. She asked for my money and turned to the other clerk behind her and grumbled a few words about my application. The other clerk said "Well, we're not hiring right now."
This confused my girlfriend, who was with me. "He turned in his application when you were hiring." The other clerk said "Well, we already hired two ladies, and they were already interviewed and went through background checks." Something about the way she said "ladies" bothered me. It occurred to me that I had never, in 13 years of shopping there, seen a man working there. Not even as a stocker or manager. This was true of every Dollar General I had ever been in. Even just now, when I told my mom that they weren't hiring anymore, she said "Well, yeah, I figured that. Have you ever seen a man working there?"
Discrimination is bullshit.
