My Descartes reference in regard to this statement is relevant because in his essay
Meditations On First Philosophy he was intent on breaking down the whole scope of his knowledge in order to peel away all forms of doubtful empirical knowledge and find the one absolute reason that proves his existence and, in the process, explain why he exists and, building on that, how he could be sure of the knowledge that consequently follows (that's probably a horrendous run-on sentence :/ ). Anyway, it's an important question that I probably took more seriously than was intended in this thread and pursuing it in the way that I'm talking about probably does belong in the Philosophy Forum.
