Old Dec 8th, 2003, 08:47 PM        Rationalism or Empiricism?
Which is the source of all knowledge: human reason or human experience?

I'm inclined to think that experience is what leads to reason.

Then you reject mathematics, yes?

I do believe that pretty much everyone has a synthesis of both approaches these days; it is just a matter of the degree to which you accept them.

You realize, Senior Wiener Man, that this thread serve no purpose. The Greeks, who were debating this very topic whilst your ancestors were busy splattering their feces against rocks for general amusement (a proud tradition you seem to honour through mimicry on this board), decided the two were dichotomous. Much as we need light to discover the darkness and passion (which, in truth, is actually closer to pain than pleasure) to reveal devotion, we need experience to temper logic, and logic to dictate experience.

What you have done, in your clumsy attempt to' philosophize', was establish a false dillema. Congratulations on your discovery of a logical fallacy.

I'm not even going to answer. You didn'y say "Resolved:" Before your resolution. Your out of order. That's at least ten points for me and I don't even have to say anything.

This has been debated long since the Greeks.
