It's not the pitching, so much as the hitting, at least lately. They've won big more than a few times, but they've lost even more close games, especially recently. It seems that all their hitters are batting about .220 in the month of June. Not gonna win much with stats like this.

The Rays are hotter than a peppered pussy and have effectively surprised the shit out of everyone. Does anyone else think they will sustain this level of play and take the division title? Personally, as much as I'd like to see them shut the Yanks and the Sox up, I just can't believe that they will outlast those two by the end of the season.

Depends. The Yankees are killed by injuries to key players and their bullpen is awful and the young starters aren't coming around. Mussina is pitching like it was 10 years ago, but how long can that last?

the hitting is weak, but the last few seasons, they've been slow in the first half. If they avoid digging too deep and hole for themselves and their pitchers get productive, it'll be a interesting in September.

The Red Sox have injury problems, too, but have been able to keep pace. I'd say its simply a matter of time before they can put distance on the Rays.

edit: As soon as I say this, the Rays go on to sweep the BoSox. Hrm.

How 'bout them Phillies? They've won more games in their last 5 (4) than in their previous 12 (3). In other words, as long as they play National League teams, they're OK - the American League teams kill them.

I propose that they should be exempted from interleague play on the grounds that they're not good enough.

Bosox just took a 1/2 games lead.

NL East at the all-star break: 1 1/2 games separate the 1st place phils from the 3rd place fish.

Mets win 9 in a row (11-2 for the month of July) and go from 6 back to 1/2 back and sole possession of second place as well as 1 1/2 back in the wild card. All within 2 weeks. the break couldn't have come at a worse time.
