I was just reading an article about how a few companies are planning to start intorduceing advertisements into online games. Things like large pictures on walls displaying a range of popup style ads from around the web. In the article it said they did a survey and 50% of people though it was a good idea..... Fucking idiots.
Is noting sacred? in a few years every single fucking type of media with be cramming ads down out throats 24hours a day.

If i have paid for a game, i have the right to play it without bieng informed of the latest advancements in penis enlargement technology.

I could see that some people would use ads to help pay the server rental costs but to be honest how much could they get? and would it justify annoying 99% of people who play on the server?

Discuss.

It depends...I don't play city of heroes, but if I did I think it'd be pretty cool to see billboards for real life products while you're flying around the city. If the kind of unwanted shit that you get in your inbox is what they're advertising though, then it'd get annoying pretty damn quick.

You mean like "Now entering Xanax park, Viagra City. Get a bigger penis and cheap printer fluid!"?

Bill board type ads would be vergeing on acceptable but what im talking about are games like CS, HL2DM, etc where the ads would literaly just be stuck to walls.
People who used to play cs will probably remember some clans servers had custom textures on parts of the map with their logo on. It would be like this but more dynamic, i.e. it would change every so often.

Yeah, but you've gotta admit, a park dotted with penis shaped trees? Pretty intriguing...eh? eh? ...

Most games that use this are sports games, which are simply money-makers in the first place. They know that loyal fans will buy the next installment year after year, no matter what ad is in the middle of the field.

I'm fine with running into a coke machine in an office in Splinter Cell, or seeing billboards for furturistic products (sometimes they make these hilarious) in futuristic games. But if I saw a pepsi billboard while I was driving around New Mombasa in Halo 2, I know I'd be pissed.
