I stand by my opinion that something you have to see the end of before you understand any of it is really asinine plot design.

I mean, I'm fine with stuff that does that because it's fun to go OH OK NOW I GET IT but I'd like at least a little fucking understanding of my surroundings while I'm playing through the game, otherwise I really have no motivation to get to the end and find out what's going on. Why? Because I don't care.

It's sort of hard to get an idea of what makes a character tick when they have mabye 5 lines of dialogue every two hours. Unless those 5 lines are really, really well thought out and designed to stick in my head and tell me exactly what this person is all about. SH2 doesn't do that very well. I can't sympathize with anyone when all I know about them is I DIDN'T DO IT RALLLLLLLPH

I think. That was another thing that got me about the game, once the enemies started displaying really scary behavior (the j-horror style sped up crawling made me shit the first time ) nothing was really done with it

all in all it was a bad idea for you to start with SH2 because then you go into it not really knowing what silent hill IS. i'd suggest you play the first or third one next and don't bother with the 4th one at least for a while.

here's the very quick 'n dirty plot synposis:

1. James killed Mary. no surprise there. she really was suffering from a disease, and he euthanized her by suffocating her with a pillow. but James was mentally unstable to begin with and couldn't handle the trauma. so he concocts an elaborate fantasy based around Silent Hill. 2. Silent Hill is/was a popular resort town that was built on sacred Indian grounds. again, no surprise there. 3. all of the monsters in the game are personifications of James mental instability. the first monsters you encounter, the acid shooting ones, appear to be people wrapped in straight jackets. they're also very cowardly and will scuttle away when knocked down. the double-legged mannequin monsters represent a repressed desire for sexuality. Mary wasn't very sexual -- Maria, her doppelganger, is. pyramid head is James' violent side -- hence the violent rape scene. Pyramid Head IS James in a way. he's constantly killing Maria throughout the game as James killed Mary. 3. Maria is James' guilt. she's all of the sexy stuff that James wanted from Mary but didn't have. when you fight her as the final boss, she appears to be a freaky twisted image of Mary in a dilapidated hospital bed. 4. there was never a letter from Mary. remember how i told you to keep checking the note? a little before the end of the game, the note appears blank. there was never a message from silent hill. 5. Mary's been dead for a few days, not years. she's in the trunk of his car. (i forget how i figured that one out)

I figured the note would change into something really nasty after a while, but yeah, I did notice how there seemed to be less of it by the time I got to the prison. Also, most of that I already knew, including James killing Mary which some dick I know spoiled for me. Among other things. I didn't know she was in his trunk, though, lol

I'll go watch the ending(s) on Youtube and if I still don't care I'll just play the other ones.

I'm fine with this kind of depth in a game, but again, if the game itself doesn't have any immediate substance it's going to be really goddamn hard for me to play it and try to draw this stuff out. Mabye if I were a bit more squeamish the scare factor would have done it for me, but I'm not ;(

that's why i say this game is a second play-through game, because once you know the ending everything just falls into place and starts making sense. plus you don't spend 6 hours bumbling around the town like an idiot and the story unfolds much quicker because you know where you're going.

oh, and James' father owns the haunted apartment building in the 4th game, which explains a whole fucking lot

Another thing, the apartment with all the butterflies/moths/whatever really stuck out to me, is there something significant about that

I might be reading too much into it, but I always sort of connected that room to entering the darkness of Silent Hill and the unknown (like reaching into that hole in that room.) The moths and butterflies signify metamorphosis, change, or rebirth depending on how you look at it.

Or it could just be that a room full of moths is just fucking creepy
