IKAROS is as far as I know operating normally. The sail was successfully deployed 2 weeks ago - at least in part (I think they're unfurling it in stages). Other than this, they're on track for arrival at Venus in 6 months, with a price tag of $16M US. Micro-cheap by today's standards.

@ Milhouse - when are you planning on divulging the secret of warp drive?

I think the life forms under Europa are going to be originally from Pluto. That's also why we declassified Pluto as a planet. We took away their home.

What I don't understand is how the craft is travelling to Venus if it's being propelled by solar emittance since, uh, you have to go toward the sun to get to Venus.

you can still go towards the wind in regular sailing if you use special tricks, i don't see why you couldn't do that with solar sailing

probably id imagine what happens is maybe they dont actually sail against the thing but they are using inertia but i dont know

plus in space you dont necessarily have to travel towards the sun to get to venus you can just travel perpendicular to it

Solar sails don't have to rely entirely on solar winds. You could just hit it with radiation or a laser or magic lighting bolts to make it go.

@Leader - Read "Rocheworld" by Dr. Robert L. Forward. He thought of exactly this mode of space travel, and made it realistic. Laser-powered stardrive. Awesome stuff.
