I am at a treacherous moment in my life. I have finally admitted to myself that the direction I have been going so far has been all wrong, and I must switch tracks now or learn to love what I have.

I am 26, educated in nothing but art. I only have an AA and I've been working as a graphic artist in a small firm for 2.5 years now. And I hate it. I take longer than my coworkers, I get too attached to my work and grudgingly let go in favor of something that pleases the client more, which I have trouble putting my heart into. I'm bored with my work, and I realize I just forced myself into thinking this was what I wanted when I was younger.

I feel like I am aging rapidly, that time is running out and I don't have the option to get a real education anymore. I spend all my spare time learning about and discussing various sciences, philosophy and theology. I seem to love everything but art. Science is a long road, at least 7 years of study, but its what I love most, though I would have to think carefully about what field; maybe chemistry or pharmaceuticals.
But I recently learned that electricians are in high demand lately, and the pay is good and the work is never boring. That is a 5 year road, its hardly a risk as you are not only paid while apprenticing but signed up for the union when you are done and they always finds work for you, and it pays twice what I would ever get as a graphic artist. I would be content.

So I am in a panic, I don't know if this love of the sciences is permanent but there isn't anything I've cared more about in the past couple of years, but admittedly might not be good at after the journey? Or go for what is stable, and probably be perfectly happy with, even if it isn't my dream? Or am I out of time? This has been nagging me for half a year now, and I have to make a decision soon.

I was almost 30 before I decided to make a drastic career change. I knew that if I kept myself stuck behind a desk in a cubicle for the rest of my life, I would go postal. I went for it, and it's the best decision I've ever made in my life.

Take the plunge. If you don't, you'll never forgive yourself. Also, we will make fun of you.

Take some classes at a community college. They're pretty cheap and'll put you towards being certified, as far as being an electrician goes. You'll also probably find out if you're really into it or if it's just a thing.

You can always go back to the shittier paying job that you hate. By that, I mean you've got nowhere to go but up if you wanna do something else. It's never too late, bro.

Electrician is what I was thinking about doing... since I'm in a similar boat and decided that I needed a trade to get me through life.

You don't sound convinced that science is actually what you want to do, although, you know, it's a post on a forum, so maybe you are and I just can't tell.

I think I am just in the romance of learning. I can still learn about various kinds of science if I take up a vocational trade, especially since I don't want to commit to any one field of knowledge. Yeah, I think I am happy being a hobbyist, though I won't feel like I am actually contributing much to society.
A good friend of mine who sometimes posts here, Camacazio is a fancy pants physicist and I think I am just envious of all the ground breaking stuff he gets to do every time I speak with him- which is practically every day. I am pretty sure it isn't what I want though. I was just very anxious when I wrote that post and felt like if I didn't do something important I'd be wasting my life. I'm a bit calmer now.

What's the scope of the importance you want, though? To humanity, country, race, friends and family, yourself?

I seriously go through your mid life crisis post every other day, and I know people in a lot worse situations regarding their life than me, or you it sounds.

Does that make you feel better? It was supposed to.

you like science, you like learning, become a scientist. it's what they dedicate their lives to. if you want a more practical background as a precaution there are many fields you could minor in that would compliment a science degree. economics, computer science, bio/info technologies, engineering, etc.

as far as the age thing goes don't worry about it. seriously, you wont be out of place at all in a university environment.

Electrician is not an exciting job. You'll be sorry you quit your desk job so that you can crawl in dirty attics full of asbestos in 100 degree heat. Even better is when it's raining and the house you are wiring doesn't have a roof yet. Don't forget waking up at 4:30 so that you can get to the site by 6. Lugging spools of wire up 5 flights of stairs was my favorite part of the job. Hanging out with construction workers with little education is very romantic, I'll give you that.

Personally Id just become a Hobo. Roaming without a care in the world. All the folks you'll meet and make friends with. All the sights you will see to last a thousand lifetimes.

Sure you have to sacrifice a few essentials but oh well~

My wife is a chemist and one the pluses of science is the wide range of jobs you qualify for, she veered towards the organic chemistry and works in a lab that does environmental stuff. She also gets to trek through the woods and find wells and stream at the power plants and waste management facilities to test and make sure they are not polluting, so it gets her out of the lab at least once a month.

If you like science and have a mind for it, go with engineering. You'll be done in 4 years (if you become a full-time student) and you'll be making more money than anyone else without having to go on to graduate-level education (and even then you'll probably still be making more).

Of course, this is from someone who got his engineering degree and found it quite boring. Oh well. I haven't applied it to real life yet, though, but I'm fairly certain that entry-level engineers get desk jobs. My friends say it's basically getting paid to play solitaire and check facebook, which is pretty much what I do for free

And keep in mind that it's never, NEVER too late to go to school. Ever. Of all your current worries, being too old to go to school shouldn't even be something to care about. As long as it's something you want to do, it's not a waste of time. Life is about doing what you want to do. Doing what you hate is the bigger waste of time.

There's a bajillion of grants and ways to get money to go to school as well, to say nothing of having a part time job or something, anyway.

Perhaps being an electrical engineer would suit you better.

Echoing what others have said before, go back to school, learn what you want to learn and get your degree. There are many disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology to choose from.

26 is half my age, for pities sake. And you call this a mid-life crisis? I guess I'm dead then.

Flagg is right, 26 ain't shit. This is more like a quarter of the way crisis.

You should go with the science route since in the end you'll have more self-respect. On the other hand if you don't become an electrician you'll never get the chance to meet lonely women going through their own mid-life crises like in the movies.

I think this a slightly more serious form of the "teenager mid-life crisis"
