Old Oct 24th, 2007, 03:37 PM        Ghost Movies!
Of all the horror sub-genres out there, ghost stories/movies are my least favorite, seeing as how most are painfully boring and, in the end, all are about fucking ghosts. I don't care they're portrayed, ghosts are the useless dweebs of the monster universe. My opinion, take it or leave it.

...Anyway, despite this, two ghost movies have always stood out in my mind, for completely different reasons.

On the cheesy end of the spectrum, we "The Changeling", an awesome movie starring none other than George C. "Motherfucking Patton" Scott. (For all of you who haven't seen a great George C. Scott movie, let alone Patton, he's John Rainbird from Firestarter.) It's a great movie, in a hammy, more-ominous-than-remotely-scary-The Omen kinda way. Child murder, conspiracy, phantom wheelchairs, and big rigs crushing families abound.

Next, we have "The Devil's Backbone" by Guillermo Del Toro, who you should all know by now. Seriously, see this fucking movie, it's about as good as a ghost movie can ever be.

You guys have any favorites?

I have the changeling on dvd, but I'm the same way when it comes to ghost movies. They really don't interest me too much and I'd much rather see a mediocre slasher movie than a good ghost movie.

The Frighteners is fucking awesome though. It's on next on AMC's 10 days of horror thing, too.

I know, I was laughing about that cuz I finally got the Frighteners on DVD last month having not seen it in ages... and now it's on TV like every day 'til Halloween.

Still, I friggin' love that movie and Milton Dammers is the man. With quotes like "Sheriff! You are violating my territorial bubble!" and "My body is a roadmap of pain." you just can't go wrong with that guy. Amusingly enough, a lot of people seem to remember it being Crispin Glover who played that role when it was actually Jeffrey "Re-Animator" Combs.

The Changeling is a Canadian flick allegedly based on some events is Colorado. It is also slated for the remake treatment, produced by Del Toro.

Holy shit, that guy's busy. So let's see, that brings the count to three upcoming remakes that he's involved with?

Grudge blew and was an entirely pointless remake. A Tale of Two Sisters was a pretty good South Korean movie. It's currently getting the American remake treatment for 2009.

I also like South Korean revenge movies like Old Boy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. I was living in Korea when those came out, as well as Phone. Or P-own, as my students would say.

Gay’ says the person with the pink, androgynous, cosplay-creature signature.

Seriously though, it was a remake that exists only to be spoon fed to western audiences. An Americanized version of a Japanese move, that still actually takes place in Japan. Pointless, much?

Why, in your opinion, was it better?

Wow, just looked up A Tale of Two Sisters. Freaky ass shit, definitely going on the Netflix queue.

Also, just watched The Haunting again, completely forgot about the awesome door-bulging sequence near the end.

I don't remember anything about The Haunting. I saw it at the theatre, only a couple of rows aways from the screen, and I was quite literally mesmerized by the penile nose of Owen Wilson.

'His nose totally looks like a cock'

Ten minutes later

'I mean, look at it. It's a dick!'

Ten minutes later

I mean, have you ever seen that movie Nothing but Trouble? There is this Judge, Dan Akroyd, and he's got this prosthetic nose that looks like a giant dong. It was crafted, sculpted and cast to look like a dick. They probably even made more than one. Probably dozens...

They should have just hired that guy...

...or he should have went into porn...

grudge was better because ju-on put me to goddamn sleep. i like jap movies, sure. i've seen awful jap remakes, pulse comes to mind. but the grudge was better than ju-on. the whole way they handled the ghost chick, with the gurgling ect really freaked me out i remember my girlfriend was asleep and i was watching it on satellite & I had to wake her up because I was so scared. i can't even remember any of ju-on. but goddamn, the stair scene in the grudge was EXCELLENT.

they had the same director and everything, but the grudge had a way bigger budget. and it shows. removed jaws, sarah michelle gellar dyeing, the movie not putting me to sleep.. I would have liked Ju-On more if I saw it first. But The Grudge is better, in lots of ways. I can see people liking it if they are some sort of poor-movie purist, but I like my movies shiney.

IN CONCLUSION:

ju-on gets props for being the OG home-dawg, but in the end it is weeaboo jerkoff fodder for kids who can't appreciate the sleek, upgraded package that is THE GRUDGE
