All bets will be off, incidentally, if we find oil reserves in Mare Orientale.

I hope Congress has some cajones.

Oh, that's right, they don't.

As a scientist, I find this more than a little disconcerting, as the moon is by far and away the best nearby source of He(III) which is one of the better feedstocks for a potential commercial fusion reactor. As a taxpayer, however, I understand the need to make hard budget decisions.

I hope that there are enough wild speculators out there to keep the research going (as in the case of stem cell research) so that even without federal funding the science still advances (and maybe even gets better).

Ah, I'm just rationalizing.

Things cost money, it turns out.

You probably can't both trim the deficit and engage in lunar expeditions. Blame the yokel who thought we needed to invade the middle east for our current lack of U.S.S. Enterprises.

Cutting lunar mission funding is part of the effort starting next year to trim the deficit. This is what I was referring to. Obviously more money was added to the deficit during Obama's term thus far since the focus at that time was avoiding a depression, but even then he added far less money to the debt than Bush did.

THe way I read it, the Constellation program was already waaaaaaay behind schedule, and while $9B has already been spent, it was predicted to go waaaaaaay over budget. Even Buzz Aldrin, one of the more vocal advocates of the space program, stated that this was the right move.

He's not cutting NASA's budget by much, if at all, just reprioritizing the money with funding going to more development rather than going into this single project.

I need to research the implications in more depth, but for right now, it seems that there is more to this story than just Obama cutting the moon program.

I get that, I get that. I really do. He had a big mess to clean up. I concede that such a thing had to be done to avoid even more of a catastrophe, though there are some things I would've done differently. If I could do that, though, I wouldn't be in school at the moment. I'd probably have my own bank.

I was trying to get your goat, playing the obnoxious conservative.
