Old Apr 5th, 2003, 11:45 AM        Odd Censorship of Army of Darkness on TV
I'm watching AoD on Sci-Fi right now (nothing else on, too tired to get a DVD or something), and I just saw something that struck me as odd.

When Evil Ash splits from Ash, he says "I'm Bad Ash, and you're Good Ash." They blanked out the Ash parts.

I've seen this on TV a few times, and I don't remember them ever doing that. More importantly, I don't know WHY they'd do that. Hell, even if they thought he was saying "Ass," it makes no sense.

What makes it weirder is that Sci-Fi is using bits and pieces from the 81-minute Hail to the King version, the 96-minute Directors Cut, and bits and pieces of Deleted scenes that never made it into either version. I recently purchased Anchor Bay's Boomstick Edition, so it just looks doubly odd like Sci-Fi cut it themselves and while adding some new footage also cut some of the supposedly-violent footage to boot.

(Future Zbu: They used the 'Hail to the King' ending at S-Mart, which means that Sci-Fi for some reason decided to pad out the 81 minute version after cutting it for violence with deleted scenes or parts of the Director's Cut. Why they would cut it for violence in the first place, however, is beyond me. Especially from a channel that airs Suspiria late nights.)

Movie censorship can be so weird sometimes. I don't know if it's the same in the US, but over here channels sometimes cut up unoffensive parts of the movie to make it fit into their timeslot (they also, nearly always, hack off the end credits - unless there's still something signficant shown, like in There's Something About Mary). I think the guys who slice up the movies may just be frustrated that they couldn't get a job in actual movie editing, and try to add their own touch to the movies. Or fuck them up to take out their anger on viewers. Or something.

I only caught the beginning of the SciFi showing, and it was different than I remember it because I'm used to watching the old VHS copy.

Other than that... I seem to have come down with the flu, so I was dozing off and waking up during several different parts.

some channels do the most fucked up censorship, I can't remember if it was USA or TNN or TNT or what, but I was watching dazed and confused (actually I good movie) and they censored like the first and laugh half hours of the movie and that was it...

I swear I heard them censor out the God in "God Damn" on the shit movie Anaconda today, (channel surfing).

That's because "Damn" is light cussing, and "Goddamn" is blasphemous.

I remember they bleeped "butt-head" on Back to the Future 2 on USA. But they left in "ass"

Can anyone from Britain confirm that the BBFC cut the Obi-Wan/Jango Fett head butt from AotC? And that certain types of knives can't be shown on-screen?

another example of odd tv censorship was in back to the future post september 11 on tnt. they edit out the "by terrorists" part of the letter marty wrote where he said "you will be shot by terrorists." the oversensitivity at that point in time proved to bring some real odd censorship.

I've seen a very weird censorship cut of "Aliens" on TV. Basically they cut out "Fuck" and replaced it with lesser words, including "shit" - but what was really funny was the way people at the TV studio had done voice-overs to help clear it up

"Shit, holed up!"
"Alright, we've got seven canisters of CM-20 - I say we roll them in there and nerve gas the whole damn nest"
"Friggin' A!"
"That's great! That's just friggin' great man! Now what hell are we supposed to do? We're in some real pretty shit now man!"

Yawn.

I've got one that beats all of those.

A few years ago, I was watching Blazing Saddles on TNT or TBS or one of those useless Ted Turner stations. In the original version, one of the most-remembered scenes of that movie is when Bart (the black guy) first becomes town sheriff. He passes an old lady on the street, and the following conversation takes place:

Bart: "Good mornin', ma'am. And isn't it a lovely mornin'?"
Lady: "Up yours, ******!"

Here's how it happened in the TNT version:

Bart: "Good mornin', ma'am. And isn't it a lovely mornin'?"
Lady: "Outta my way... ******."

Good thing they took out that "up yours." That just offends me every time.

Grumpy Old Men which I believe they were showing on TNT. Not only did they edit out anything that was more coarse then "damn", but they also editted out stupid things like "schmuck" and "putz" and that sort of thing, which really got me wondering how they could actually come up with words that were less offensive then schmuck, putz and things of that ilk. :/

Because "schmuck" and "putz" are Yiddish terms which mean "asshole" and "dick," respectively. I'm not making that up.

Yeah, but why bother? If they're not saying it outright why waste the money and time to take care of it? Geez, we are getting too sensitive.

Sspad, are you kidding with that blazing saddles thing? I've seen some horrible edits for movies on tbs, but that's just... :/

Btw, the best line is the last part of

"You spare the women?"
"No, we rape the shit outta them!"

That's one of the funniest but dumbest things I've heard of in a while. I'm definitely gonna look for that next time I see it on tv though. It sounds funnier than the actual line.

Another example of bad editing was on Porky's on comedy central. in the movie the one guy says "did you get the ******?" and the other guy corrects him and says "come on you know they prefer to be called colored."

on comedy central they replaced the n-word with black guy so it ended up "did you get the black guy?" and the other guy responds "come on you know they prefer to be called colored."
