"A Newsweek poll found that 55% of Americans believe every word in the Bible is literally true..."

No wonder the whole world hates us.

Also: "67% believe the entire Christmas story is literally true and 79% believe Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary with no human father."

So it's more like 4 out of 5 Americans are sheeple.

What I find even more disturbing is that most of these same people blatantly ignore the teachings they believe to be "literally true" in the holy book. I guess it's human nature to be hypocritical.

I guess no-one told them that back then, "virgin" meant "young woman", not "hasn't fucked yet." :/

It's much simpler than that. 55% belive the Bible is literally true, every word.

What % of the American people do you suppose have EVER read 'every word' in the bible, or even most of it? And I mean read it themselves, not had it read at them and interpretted for them.

I'm going to say the % of people seriously familliar with the Bible in any sort of coherent way is way, way, way, way less than 55%. It's a thick book, you have to be at LEAST a high school level reader to make any sense of it at all, and it's got some very big words.

It's EASY to believe every word in a book you haven't read is literally true. All you have to do is have a simplistic certainty that if and when you get around to reading it, it will be true and it won't contradict itself. After all, God wrote it. You don't need to read it to know God is not a liar.

On the other hand, I think it's pretty offensikve to believe there's a book out their written by the Lord himself and never get around to sitting down and reading it cover to cover. If I was the Lord, I'd at very least be hurt, if not actively pissed off by people who said they emphatically believed every word of my book, but hadn't read it.

And He knows what you've read and when. He knows when you're sleeping and when you're awake, and when you've been bad and when you've been good.

Oh, crap, that's Santa isn't it?

Did he write any books?

I wonder if they included all of those "John 3:16" guys that are always holding up signs at baseball games. That group is fairly indicative of the mental capacity of that whole demographic.

Oh, and I do believe that Santa Claus has written a book; that is if Santa's real name happens to be Jeff Guinn.

This whole thing reminds me of another news item I recently came across. The title was something like "Stevie Wonder Bashes Eminem" and it went on to say that Stevie Wonder was unhappy with Eminem's portrayal of Micheal Jackson in his latest video. Shouldn't he be the last person to be speaking out about this? Call me crazy, but I'm pretty damn sure that Mr. Wonder didn't actually see the video.

So, anyway, I guess my point would be that if you haven't actually experienced witnessed/seen something for yourself, then don't act as though you have.

Maybe that 55% doesn't know what it means when something is "literally true."

I think 100% of this thread proves why it's so difficult for 3/4 of the people on this board to understand why and how President Bush won the popular vote this year.

(although I do think Max makes a great point about the ratio of those who believe the Bible literally, and those who have actually read it entirely).
