We should not be assassinating people! damnit i don't want my taxes spent on that, ever.

Venezuela's Chavez Says Washington Plotting His Assassination
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Saturday he had evidence that the United States was planning to assassinate him. On a visit to New Dheli, Chavez said, "If anything happens to me, the person responsible will be the president of the United States." On February 20, Chavez said the United States was plotting to kill him, and his foreign minister said three days later that U.S. accusations against Chavez were a sign of an impending attack. Washington dismissed the allegations calling them "wild charges." On Friday, Chavez said his country would not stop supplying oil to the United States unless "the U.S. government gets a little bit crazy and tries to hurt us." During a speech in India on Saturday, Chavez cited a report by Iraq's health ministry that claimed that US forces in Iraq had used mustard gas and nerve gas during their assault on the town of Fallujah last year. Chavez condemned the US for its continuing occupation.

The U.S. government is already a little bit crazy! sonofa bitch i'm going to be livid if chavez goes down like wellstone.

You're right. It must be GWB, because he certainly doesn't have anyone in his own country who are both powerful and pissed off at him.

Honestly, if its one thing we are good at, its violence. "Trying" to kill him my ass.

Try indeed, do you remmber the assasination attempts on fidel, el blanco? They tried and failed there. I'm sure the CIA/Pentagon etc have learned a thing or two by now, though.

The powerful elite in Venezuela have already killed many Chavez supporters and poor, but don't think they would attempt to kill Chavez himself without the US green-lighting it first. They have already proven themselves too useless to rig a referendum, and since the only help they can get is outside the country, I don't think they would want to shake things up without backup or consent.

If Chavez goes the way of Allende, it wont be as bad for Venezuela as it was for Chile. The revolution there is much deeper than it was in Chile, and Chavez doesn't have as much faith in parlimentary elections, which means the local bolivian circles (consisting of workers, peasants and soldiers) have more political and organisational power to defend themselves from any tin-pot dictator instaled by the capialists.

And I love how allegations of election fraud are only valid when they are brought up by what you view as left wing interests.

I may be crazy, but I don't think the US is responsible for every bad thing that happens in this world.

Personally, I think some of those psychos are capable of doing in Chavez, and he just did this in hopes that now we will make sure he doesn't get whacked and we get pinned for it.

well I doubt if the US is going to try to STOP an asasination attempt, they'd just distance themselves.

Neither do I. But history has proved that when any threat to worldwide capitalism arises, the most powerful will always protect their intrests. Venezuela is dangerous not because they will pull cut out oil or something, but because it is an example for other Sth American nations, and for millions of left wing people around the world. The US won't invade, or drop bombs or something like that, but another coup or an attempt on Chavez's life can pretty much be guaranteed from the Venezuelan bourgeois, and it would most likely be backed by the US

Its just so simple isn't it?

Socialist leader claims a threat or is harmed- US did it.

Now matter how wonderful a people's champion of the proleteriat Chavez is, he is still a politician. He is trained to use the media and public opinion.

You don't see how he can be doing so? Chavez is attacked, he has already put it in your one way head that GWB puched the button for it. This makes Venezuala an even more hostile place for US interests, putting chavez in a better negociating spot.

I'm not saying its exactly whats happening, but its not a crazy scenerio.

US intrests do not include Chavez being in power. I don't hail every word that chavez says, I'm pretty sure I'm further left than he, but I can believe that the US would want Venezuela back the way it was in '97. Assasinations have been by the US against socialist governments before, I don't underestimate their willingness to use it as a tool.

I'm not saying that they will, I'm just saying that they might, ad yes, it is more likely that the Venezuelan rich will be responsible.

if it does happen, the US certainly wont be crying.

i think arming the enemy of our enemy is pretty standard tactics but black budget foreign ops are always ready.. top secret isn't rated PG and aint in the histry books unless its your enemy doing it.

you're a bit jumpy on accusing others of simplyfying but

is simplifiying to the point of ridicule
no, i never think its that simple, there's a huge mix of crap going on and trends are contradicted in every locale yet trends and etc continue.

i've been personally worried about the venezuelans sticking their neck out with chavez for years now because of gwb, its not some thing i've latched onto because of a headline.

but seriously though, how many as you say 'socialist leaders in power Arent being hunted by the corporatocracy ?

He'll creep into your room and in a whispered, Bullwinkle voice....he'll say " Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat" as he slowly slices your throat from ear to ear......
