Has anybody seen this? Today's the first day that I've had to go to the movies since it came out, but I'm starting to worry that I've been looking forward to it for far too long. Basically, I'm worried that it's going to suck. I mean, it's got Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman singing, which by itself is a crapshoot anyway.
Any opinions?

I've seen the stage production about a dozen times, which is what the Burton version appears to be based on. Which means it's not really very fleshed out, plus from the previews the singing doesn't appear to be up to par. So then, what's the point?

I think if you are looking for a greater depth into the story aspects of the Sweeney Todd tale, there are several other straight (non musical) film adaptations. There was a great version released in 2006 that is really good. Blockbuster should have it. It's simply titled Sweeney Todd (no 'Demon Barber of Fleet Street sub-heading) and was a UK production.

This movie was kind of gay in the way Kill Bill was kind of gay, in that they throw as much blood on the screen as possible at all times.

Was it done in that same intentional, over-the-top way they did it in Kill Bill?

Let me put it this way:

Every time a razorblade grazes a neck, blood fires out of the wound with the force of a fountain, and often splatters on a camera.

This doesn't look bad really, it looks imaginative and everything, but juvinile. I really can't help but classify everything Burton makes as being geared towards pre-teens. I don't think I'll ever have the patience for another desaturated, high-contrast movie full of crazy dying people being considered normal. Really Tim Burton, grow the fuck up.

I saw the movie. It's definitely one of Burton's more mature films. Depressing as hell, especially since I saw it around Christmas.

I figured since it was a musical it would have more humor, and I like Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, so I figured I'd love it, but, uh...Not the case. Too depressing, overly stylized (I like exeggarated stylization but the blood was ridiculous), and well, I'm one of those suckers who like happy endings. I knew the thing couldn't end well going into it, but if I movie is good enough I can get past the bad ending.

The songs started blending together for me. There were some highlights for me, but mostly not.
