Me for asking my wife to return two T shirts given to us by her friend for my kids that say "Jesus loves you" and "God is great" or her friend for giving it to us and not knowing that we are not religous.

If she didn't know they aren't religious, how is she a dick?

Anyway, respectfully give them back. Thank her for the gesture but explain your position in a reasonable tone. No blood, no foul.

Because she gave them Jesus Loves You shirts without having been told they were Christians.

And? My sister brought me back an I Love Italy t-shirt from her honeymoon even though I had never been there. I'm certainly not going to be pissed over that.

What else do we know about the situation? Maybe their town has a large Christian population?

What about the fact that Christianity calls for its members to spread the Word?

No one is wrong and no one is a dick. It was a nice gesture but you guys aren't Christian so no harm done.

If you were offended then you are one of those elite whiny pussies. But you don't seem offended so just return them.

I don't think if I tell my wife her freind is a dick it would go over well :/ I just think religous people are so so wierd with the presumption that everyone is on there team. My wife was kinda pissed that she had the task of returning them but when I explained that I want my kids to wait until there adults and they can decide for themselves she didn't argue with me. My wife used to be very religous as a teen and does't really pay much attention to it now.

There is a large and obvious difference between a shirt saying a foreign country is nice and one that endorses a religion.

Yes, Christianity calls for its members to spread the word. In many cases, spreading the word makes them dicks.

I wouldn't be offended if someone gave me a Christian gift; I really wouldn't care, and I wouldn't bother returning it.

If it were a gift for my children, however, I *would* be offended. What if I gave your kids "Hail Satan" T-Shirts? That would be me being a dick. Don't you think? It's fine to assume someone is a Christian because most folks in this country are. But to act on that assumption, especially concerning impressionable children, without confirming it, is a shitty thing to do.

Not to mention all the shit that would be pummeled out of those kids at school for wearing a gay "Hail Satan" shirt.

Someone who still regularly gets pummeled in the halls of his junior high school is not in a position to say that.

If you gave my child a Hail Satan t-shirt I'd proably keep it for myself.

Giving out t-shirts makes people dicks?

I'd say "No, thank you" and give them back. Can you reasonably assume my family are Satanists? Unless we live in an area where most people are, you can't. However, its not too far fetched for a Christian to assume so.

Granted, I wouldn't give anybody a "Jesus loves you" shirt because its a crappy gift. But, you are just being a drama queen.[/quote]

I wouldn't throw a fit, either, and I probably wouldn't go to the trouble of returning the gift. I also wouldn't be too friendly with the person in the future.

Like I said, it's fine to assume but offensive to act on the assumption in a way like this before it's a certainty.

So, do you get pissed if a person on the street wishes you a merry Christmas or says God Bless you when you sneeze? Do you refuse to handle dollar bills?

Figure, if they don't know not to get you that shirt, you aren't that close to begin with.

Saying merry christmas and God bless you does not neccesarily carry religious meaning, especially in casual conversation. A shirt that says Jesus Loves You is pretty explicitly christian. And it seems to me getting a shirt like that for someone elses children seems to me to be kind of like trying to impose your beliefs on someone elses children. Which is really fucking obnoxious if the parents don't share that belief.
I'd make sure of the familys beliefs before making such a gesture.

Seeing as how Christmas is a Christian religious feast, I am inclined to disagree. Or, I can easily say a shirt that says "Jesus Loves You" holds the same meaning.

How is she imposing her beliefs? She gave them t-shirts. Don't like'em? Return them or stuff them in a drawer never to be seen again.

Yeah, Christmas is SO much about Christianity these days. You can almost TASTE the love for Jebus as you watch your grandparents fall asleep at 2 pm after too much sherry, and listen to your kids screaming like fucking banshees because you didnt get the right batteries for the Action Man abortion clinic.

Whichever way you slice it, its a fucking stupid gift. Keep your stinking religion the fuck off my kids clothes. Hey, you could have that printed on a t shirt and give it back to the original t-shirt givers.

hey now, didn't you party with the antichrist?

i got sorta reprimanded at work for wearing a shirt that said "punk bitch" on it. i said sorry and put some duct tape over the "b" word. what pissed me off was when a fellow co-worker who was terribly in love with jesus came in around easter time wearing a shirt with a crucified, bloody christ with his arms spread out across his chest and the words "he loved you this much" scrawled across it and NOBODY SAID A THING TO HIM ABOUT IT.

In answer to the original question, no one is wrong. Just return them, there's no reason for either party to make a big deal out of it.

It's no more rude for you to return the shirts than it was for the gift-giver to make an assumption about your religious beliefs in the first place.

You're missing my point, Blanco. It's the kids, man, the kids. I don't care what any Christian or pagan or Jew or Muslim says to me. I care about their influence on the children that I will have sometime in my life. No, I don't think this sort of thing would actually have more than a nominal effect on any normal kids, but it's the thought that counts.

who cares? hail satan, jesus loves you, whats the difference?

i mean, jesus does love you, even if you dont love him! no worse than getting a shirt that says "george has a huge penis". a constant truth and a huge lie all in one package. something for everyone as far as i can tell.
