MOVIE FORUM!!

Yeah, yeah, except here's my question. This is a very political story if it sticks even slightly to the comic book it's adapted from. The comic was a reaction to the Thatcher administration, but if anything it's issues are more thorny today than they were then.

For those of you not familiar, the protagonist of the story (it would be pushing it to call him the hero) is a terrorist, and the British government he's fighting is facist.

Do you think there will be any sort of political holler? Will R's latch onto it as an easy target, hollywood siding with terrorists, encouraging terrorism? Will Dems try to outflank the R's on the right by denouncing it first? (My bet is Hillary could go for that, it's just bout her speed as an issue)

Or will it be ignored?

Or is it a serious issue? Is it irresponsible of Hollywood to relaese a movie where the 'hero'

SPOILER ALERT SO STOP NOW IF YOU NEED TO

Blows up parliament and a British subway?

I'm glad someone brought this up in the politics forum.

Honestly, I don't think anything's going to happen. The threat that this movie presents is much harder to vilify than the easily targeted "homosexual agenda" found in Brokeback Mountain.

The Rs have too much on their plate right now to really worry about another Liberal Hollywood movie, even if it does go squarely against everything they stand for.

I thought it was interesting the GOP's called it the most dangerous movie of the year. That only made me want to see it even more.

I think it's a lot easier to target a film that glorifies a man who slaughters civilians and brainwashes his love than it is to target Brokeback.

Mark my words, if this film is anything like the comic, it will make a splash.

My fear is that this film will give anarchism an even worse name. V is an anarchist, if you weren't aware.

No I wasn't aware that on page 41 of the book, when V is talking to the statur of Justice that he says that he has a new lover, and "Her name is Anarchy, and she has taught me more as a mistress than you ever did!"

Thanks for fucking enlightening me, OAO. Where would I be without you?

Is it a "In a future where emotions are forbidden..." type story?

I really don't want to see it if it's like that.

Emotions aren't forbidden. BUT, a highly right-wing fascist government records everything you do, allowing no differing opinions. They specifically targeted (in the early stages) homosexuals, black people, and Jews. Now, it's pretty much Hitler's wet dream, aside from the hair thing. White, straight people as far as the eye can see.

EDIT: Also, if it's anything like the book, entertainment has been degraded into only a few catagories. Either it is probaganda, or designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator of society, which, as luck would have it, has become all of society.

does V turn out to be a homosexual, black, anarchist, Jew? because that would make it a little different from Equilibrium, 1984 and Farenheit 491

We never see who V is. That way, it is left open for debate. Also, finding out who V is would take something away from the character.

I'm going to stop before I tell too much. If you really want me to go into spoiler theater, then PM me about it. Otherwise, watch the movie, but more importantly, read the book. You can get it in paperback or hardback from any Barnes & Noble, and if they don't have it in stock, they'll order it. Trust me, you won't regret reading it.

I think this movie might make a bit less of a splash than Brokeback Mountain because no one is going to care about a teenage anarchist wet dream about a flamboyantly gay terrorist fighting against an unrealistic, whiny image of the british government. Because it's ridiculous.

also please don't cite any pages from the comic book telling me about how I'm wrong

I was simply pointing out that it is rediculous to point out something to someone that obviously doesn't need pointed out. You are entitled to your opinion of the story. I disagree with you, but you are entitiled.

They also persecuted people with left-wing tendencies and pretty much anyone who didn't agree with their policies, so V could be all of those things at the same time.

And V is pretty much completely insane.
