CBS Seeks Opinions in Search for an Evening News Anchor

By JACQUES STEINBERG
Published: May 23, 2005
The development of a permanent successor to Dan Rather on the "CBS Evening News" has been shrouded in secrecy, but a meeting last Tuesday at the headquarters of the network's parent company, Viacom, suggests that CBS is canvassing opinions from people well outside the news division.

One of the six attendees was Terry Wood, who developed the "Dr. Phil" talk show and "The Insider," a celebrity news program, and who now supervises those programs as an executive at Paramount Television and King World Productions, both Viacom divisions. Ms. Wood, in a high-profile flourish of corporate synergy, was responsible for the recent CBS prime-time special in which Dr. Phil (Phillip McGraw) interviewed Pat O'Brien, the host of "The Insider," about his treatment for substance abuse. She is a close associate of Leslie Moonves, the chairman of CBS.

Dan Rather received a round of applause at the end of his final broadcast.
Ms. Wood formerly worked for Oprah Winfrey's production company, Harpo, and before that was a producer at CBS News, including on "60 Minutes" and Mr. Rather's program.

She was accompanied to the meeting by Larry M. Rickel, a consultant based in San Antonio who is generally called upon by local news directors to suggest how they might improve their programming. Mr. Rickel has also served as a consultant to Ms. Wood on "The Insider" and another program she oversees, "Entertainment Tonight."

They were joined by David Sirulnick, executive vice president of news at MTV, also a Viacom unit, which has occasionally collaborated with CBS News, including on news segments for MTVU, the channel's on-campus network.

The three remaining participants were Andrew Heyward, president of CBS News; Marcy McGinnis, senior vice president of news coverage for the division; and Jim Murphy, executive producer of the "CBS Evening News" for Mr. Rather and his interim replacement, Bob Schieffer.

The meeting was described last week by three people, each of whom had either participated in it or been told about it, but who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it. One of those individuals agreed to describe it after having expressed disappointment that people from the entertainment side of Viacom were being given a voice in the affairs of CBS News.

A spokeswoman for CBS News, Sandra Genelius, confirmed that the meeting had taken place and described it as one of "dozens" that Mr. Heyward had convened "to look at all aspects of the genre." Asked in particular about Ms. Wood's participation, given her current role producing entertainment-focused programming, Ms. Genelius stressed the news background of Ms. Wood and all the other participants.

Mr. Moonves has said that he wanted to move beyond a "voice of God, single-anchor" format for the news program, but so far efforts by the network to execute his rough game plan have been slow. Mr. Moonves emphasized this Wednesday morning in a breakfast meeting with journalists who cover television.

He said that he was unable to predict when Mr. Schieffer's interim tenure might end, largely because those he had asked to devise the next iteration of the evening news were finding it "a tough nut to crack."

I think it's great they're basically heading toward a reality program style method of picking a news anchor.

I hope they pick an animated kitty with really big eyes. Because then if the news was good, great! And if the news was say, about genocide, well, it wouldn't be so bad coming from a really cute kitty.

Why bother with televised news anymore? It just leads to misinformation. Tell those hicks down South to pick up a newspaper, throw more sitcoms on, and just admit that television is for entertainment, not for anything informative anymore.
