"So what do I gotta do to sell you a good used coffin today?"

I found this nifty utility called Scumm Revisited, which lets you extract pretty much everything (text, backgrounds, music, voices) from Lucasarts adventures with the infamous Scumm story system. Unfortunately it's not yet capable of extracting character sprites, but after searching some more I found two simple programs to do just that. Rockin'! One word of warning if you're going to try this though, the programs can be just as fickle about which system they'll work on as the original games are.

-Scumm Revisited (for browsing Scumm media and extracting it)
-AkosView (for ripping sprites from Full Throttle, the Dig and Curse of Monkey Island)
-Costume Ripper (for ripping sprites from other LucasArts adventures)
-Forum post with the getting-started on the latter two programs.

"So you're, what, a size six, right?"

FUCKING A! I've been waiting for programs like this to come out for AGES! Now I can finally do some good Monkey Island flash stuff.

edit: Ah ha! Finally got Costume Ripper to work properly. FS, I could kiss you, or at least give you a reach-around.

Hrm, one thing I notice is that when some of the .PCX files are opened in photoshop, they have a bunch of additional colors added to them. Have you noticed this too Fatty? The only way I could get it to not open like that was to save the .PCX files as .PNG files before opening them in Photoshop. Pretty annoying, considering how much work is already involved with doing this sprite stuff...

Is there any way to get all the .PCX files to open in photoshop correctly without displayed the extra colors and pixel blurs?

A few years ago, I found a partially working script engine that some guy was working on that would allow you to write your own games for the SCUMM platform. It was pretty cool, but too complicated.

What do you mean by "extra colours", Mock? Can't you just fix it up in Photoshop? :/

It's hard to explain chimp, it's almost like it's bluring the images and making them look as if they're seen through red & blue 3d glasses... it's not an easy photoshop fix. The only thing that seems to fix 'em is to convert 'em to .png files in the image editor that opens up when you click on a .pcx file in Windows XP. It's weird though, it only does it to random images. Might just be a bug in the program... it's not a big deal, it just adds an extra step to the already time-consuming process of pixel work.

As for that SCUMM script engine, I've heard about that a long time ago... LucasArts made the engine so they could quickly make games using it. Do you know if it's out there anywhere? That'd be pretty fun to mess around with.

I played the FM Towns version of Zak McKraken... With 256 colours and mouse support! Wow.

If I recall correctly, Lucasarts said that they'd never release their version of the SCUMM engine, but I imagine that you could figure some stuff out by using some of those programs FS listed.

The program I was thinking of was called the SCRAMM Project, which was supposed to be an independent copy of the SCUMM engine. You were supposed to be able to make your own games that would be compatible the SCUMM stuff, but I don't think it was ever released. :/

So far I've only extracted these sprites of Stan's animations and put them together, and there was nothing weird about the colors there. I think, while cycling through the Monkey Island 2 sprites, a few things had screwed up color pallettes though.

Here's an example of what some of the sprites look like when imported into Photoshop:

The left is an example of when they open up fine, but the right one is where the colors are all fucked up (pending i don't convert it to a .png graphic before importing it into photoshop).

Weird eh?

What's the problem? Now you don't need 3-D glasses to enjoy them.

It's probably a bug in the program, then. Either that, or you've got a different version of some required DLL from what FS has.

It looks too me like the palette is getting all screwed up during the encoding, although it shouldn't since PCX is essentially just a bitmap. :/

Wow, funky.

I've tried opening the resource files to Monkey Island 1 in Costume Ripper, but I'm having no success. It won't recognize any of the game files as valid. I have a different, older version of the game though, with less colors (as you can see in that Flash clip I made).

I'm almost as impressed as hearing the Monkey Island theme played as a series of squeaks from someone's cellphone!!!

"You can leave your hat on..."

It's too bad, I can't seem to get these sprite programs to work with any games other than Monkey Island 2 and Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis.

No luck for Monkey Island 1, Loom, Sam & Max or Day of the Tentacle so far, nor for Monkey Island 3.

I don't know about Loom and the others, but MI3 definitely used a different version of SCUMM.

These gifs are great. But where is LeChuck and Herman?
