You work at Applebee's Kate? How do you like it? I washed dishes for them for about 4 months.

Eww, I could never wash dishes. That's the one thing that disgusts me - dirty dishes. You're brave. However, I do like working there. Everyone's really nice, and the managers are only a couple years older than me, so we all get along and hang out. Not too much of a job atmosphere. Everyone always asks me about the food, but I don't eat it, so I have no clue what it's like. Did you like it there? Probably not the dish washing part I'm sure..

By profession, I'm normally a cook. I'm not afraid to do dishes but, avoid it when I can. When I applied, I was hired on the spot (they were desparate) and was offered 9 bucks an hour, which isn't too bad for shit-work.

But yeah, I liked the people, for the most part. After a couple months though, a few things drove me over the edge, and I walked out during the Saturday night rush.

1) I was the only dish washer in a restaurant that had 7 cooks, 3 bartenders and 12-15 waitstaff. Management was impressed that I could keep up without any problems on weekend night.

2) Almost every night, after the dinner rush, everyone who wasn't closing would dump all their dishes on me all at once. After 5 minutes, all of them would want their dishes first, especially waitstaff. After 3-4 days, I had no problem with saying "Get in fucking line" but had to say it everyday, like it was a new thing.

3) After finding out I was fast on dishes, management also had me do prep work. Which was impossible sometimes because the cooks would constantly screw around with my tasks while they were closing their stations.

4) Waitstaff started to not do their own side work, which left me to do it for them

5) I began to develop really bad rashes that were somewhat painful from working in wet clothes.

6) A cook position opened up and was given to a new hire, who was a friend of one of the other cooks, even though I had expressed interest in cooking from day one.

So, I walked out on a busy night, punched out, put on my coat, and said to a host, "If anyone asks, I quit" and proceeded to go to the nearest bar and order pints of beer and shots of Jagermeister until they said they would no longer serve me.

Eww, doesn't sound like you had too good a time. 9.00 an hour doesn't seem like a lot for all the work it seemed you did, but maybe that's because in CA the min. wage is 7.50 (soon to be 8.00). Although, you'd have to pay me quite a lot before I'd do anything like that.

That's really cool that you're a chef. My sister wanted to be one for the longest time when she was younger, but she grew out of it. I can't cook to save my life. My specialties are pasta and hot chocolate. Plus microwave cooking. I tend to burn things. Although after many many unsuccessful tries, I have become pretty good at making stir fry. I bet you get a lot of ladies in your line of profession, eh?

I am a cook... not a chef. There is a difference. The most hilarious being asking a "Chef" if they are a cook. Watch 'em freak out. And I've only met one, maybe two, people I'd give the honor of Chef.

Washing dishes does suck but it's part of the job sometimes if you choose to be in food service. As is suggesting to people not to turn off a burner on the stove because you are cooking pasta that THEY WILL NEED tomorrow, just because said burner is part of them leaving at nine pm, when you leave at 12-1am.

and no, I don't get "mad laid". We work behind the scenes. A cook's best friend is a bartender, most times.

Welcome aboard Sionainn, you're actually the 2nd Shannon we have on the forums here right now. Always good to meet a fellow Lacuna Coil fan too.

BTW, it was a good preemptive strike mentioning your boyfriend there since most of the guys here swarm to any female they see. Not that it will stop them from doing this, it just might make them change their strategy. Godspeed.
