Old Jul 8th, 2011, 02:21 PM        how do you go about getting rid of cds?
because fuck i have a lot of cds that i don't want and i would like to get rid of them preferably making some tiny amount of money off the whole bit.

but i mean if i show up at a pawn shop with 250 cds in cases they are going to send me away

same with music/bookstores, and there are none of those around here anyway

to conquer extreme boredom, i went through my box of albums and made a spreadsheet of all of them, including a rough estimate of their condition as well as the lowest price on amazon as of right now. based on that, i think there are maybe 10-20 worth listing on amazon/ebay.

i have a super audio cd version of scary monsters and super creeps which is listed on amazon and ebay at like 49 bucks. maybe i could sell that quickly for like 35!

so now i have a spreadsheet of 292 cds and many stacks of jewel cases on my floor. fuck.

i'm a moron.

if somehow all of them sold right now at the lowest price represented on amazon i would get ~1250 dollars. sweeeeeeeet. in reality, by the time i get rid of all of these, i'll probably have made 100 dollars at best.

All the ones I got rid of I sold on Amazon. I got rid of them relatively fast too, but that was 4 years ago

lol, how ridiculous is the william s buroughs rap group?

I haven't heard SNZ's bedlam ballroom either.

Does this actual album cover run in gif format too?

RE: burroughs,
it's really not as entertaining as i'd have hoped! i mean, i'm not so crazy about burroughs and the music itself is generic, but...

you see that album cover with a $2 sticker at an fye and you can't say no.

RE: squirrel nutz perse
total disappointment compared to hot.

also the cover has - oh i just learned what this is called today - a lenticular image (you know, those "holographic" images that look different when you tilt it left/right?) on the cover and i can't touch those. it's like nails on a chalkboard but fucking worse, i can't stand it. i forgot about that when i pulled the case out of the box it was in and i was thoroughly displeased.
and then it happened again with aenima and then again with the devo anthology (at that time i said "oh you fucking assholes why would you do this to me?"

swordfishtrombones
blue valentine
small change
rain dogs
maybe bone machine or nighthawks at the diner

the first two will switch off depending on my mood.

UNLESS YOU MEAN ALBUM COVER (which you don't) AND IN THAT CASE IT WOULD BE THE BLACK RIDER
(that's an album that has some william s. burroughs involvement as well!)

OH if you're asking as in "where should i start with tom waits," most people would agree that rain dogs is a good introduction. which i totally get. it was my introduction (along with the black rider, one of his least regarded albums).

WHOOPS YOU GOT ME STARTED HERE'S MORE TEXT THAN YOU BARGAINED FOR

yeah he's changed a lot. his first album (closing time) is pretty boring ("ol' 55" is pretty good and the self-titled instrumental closer is good). the second (the heart of saturday night) is vastly different and i'm still on the fence about most of it. my girlfriend insists it's her favorite, but i don't know.

nighthawks at the diner is a weird one. it totally has this novelty to it (it's a pseudo-live album and he talks a lot on it) and a lot of the songs are less cohesive and more... tom waits rambling to some music. i like it a lot, but it's not the kind of album you can listen to out of order.

small change is great. the whole album is drenched in alcohol and for about a month i listened to it every night. i guess a lot of people don't like it? i don't know why.

foreign affairs is not worth checking out, ever. it's a shame, since it's directly between two albums i love. oh god, it has an embarrassingly bad duet with bette midler of all people. it's bad.

blue valentine is great. i don't even know why i like it so much, but i do. it's got tom kind of exploring different areas without being weird yet. i can't recommend this one enough, but ehhhh i'd go ahead and skip the first track "somewhere (from west side story)" because it's, uh, "somewhere." you know, from west side story.

heartattack and vine is not something i'd recommend at first. not that it's bad, it just... i don't know, it took me a while to get into anything past the first two songs, even though the later ones are good!

and then he did a soundtrack for a movie (one from the heart) and the whole album is him and crystal gayle. i guess it has some good songs, but i couldn't tell you which. there's one song that i like a lot, but the album version is sung by gayle and it's awful. there's another one that tom sings... and it's not on here.

aaaaaand then he was off hard drugs (or so the story goes) and he met kathleen brennan and among other things she introduced him to the music of captain beefheart and the rest is history. swordfishtrombones, rain dogs, franks wild years (i don't care what people say about franks wild years, it's also really good!).

everything he's done since the 90s has been pretty hit-or-miss. a lot of people like it. hell, a lot of people love it.

i'm more of a fan of old tom waits, myself!

also i've found a bunch of radio show appearances where he'd just be hanging out and playing music and sometimes talking for like an hour or two. they're usually pretty good, but again i like his old stuff.

it's pretty funny to hear the difference in his personality between 1974 and 1975. in 74 he sounds kind of shy and young and a little bit awkward when he's talking about pool halls and 18-wheelers. then in 75 he's got that gruff, aloof thing going on.

Wait. I don't get it. You wanna get rid of some CD:s and you make a list of them, but before the list you say you don't want to get rid of some of them. So which is it? And there are a shitload of great albums on that list I would definetly keep in my collection. Are you deaf or retarded or something?

i don't really feel like removing all the ones i feel like keeping. it's basically waits, fahey, young, and sete.

also yeah there's some other good stuff but i can just download 'em and not have to worry about them taking up room.

i don't like owning too much stuff.

I COLLECT TV SHOWS ON DVD. I only have about 150 since I started in 2002, but I don't think I'd ever try selling them.

What I really liked about Swordfishtrombones was the gritty, sitting-in-a-blues-bar-at-2:30-am feeling, so if the rest his stuff has the same feeling then I'll be happy

I collect DVD:s in general. But I only collect movies i'm going to watch more than once. I haven't counted how many I have, but around 500 would be close. I also have a lot of TV show boxsets. Adventures of Pete & Pete season 3 I would buy in a heartbeat, but I don't think it'll ever be out.

And I like Rain Dogs a whole lot, but the rest of the Tom Waits catalog is still a mystery to me. I'll figure it out sometime.

EDIT: also, I am quite drunk at the mo' so I'm propably rambling

oh man don't get me started on dvds.

i didn't have much of a collection to begin with, mostly because i'm too ADD to watch movies by myself and i've never been friends with people who like stuff i like (haha, fuck). but i've inherited my girlfriend's dvd collection and it's great. so we have a like 7-foot tall bookshelf with nothing but dvds stacked on top of dvds. fuck.

You do realize that the value of the games increase given enough time? If they're in mint condition, even more so. Just sayin.

I once inherited a stamp collection from my drunk uncle (when I was like 10 or something) and threw it in the trash. Later I found out that it would have been worth some serious money. Of course, I have no way to confirm the true value now, but I have collected stuff I think will have some value in the future ever since. True story.
