Old Dec 16th, 2004, 12:35 AM        NEW MINIMOCK: "SLEDS: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?"
I actually wrote this one while I was at work today when I had some downtime. It was a lot of fun reminiscing about all the sledding I used to do and I'm sure it will show. Basically, this latest minimock o' mine is a guide to some of the best and worst sleds on the market. Hopefully it'll help you decide which one is right for you. :o

yeah I had one of the tacky snowmobile-like ones.

they rocked >: (
No kids could resist it. But it did flip over a lot.

and the roll-up ones sucked :o We called em' crazy carpets and you could feel every bump on the hill dig right into your ass.

the round ones were the best. Just hard and light enough.

Good piece, although I was expecting to see one of those obnoxiously big orange plastic sleds I used to ride on.

That's what the green one is, it's the same as the orange ones. They come in all kinda colors. Unless you're talking about some phantom sled that I've never seen or heard of. o.O

No no the green one did remind me of it. I remember how brutal it was going off snow ramps on them.

I used to have problems getting on the roll-up toboggans

Ahh, Sledding. So many memories.

On the one (or possibly two occasions) when it actually snowed during my childhood, I was sure to dash out to the nearest slope and strut my stuff.

My old school had some playing fields with hills at the back, and once or twice we were allowed to bring in sledges and race each other down the hills.

I had a red plastic thing that looked not unlike the Pelican Snow runner, which got a huge great twist in it and had a tendency to not travel in even a remotely straight line. My dad knocked up a kind of Flexible Flyer with pallette wood and steel piping that was so heavy it never actually made any forward motion whatsoever.

But best of all, near my house there was a lake with a steep embankment up one side, and one winter the whole thing froze up. You could hurtle down the slope at not inconsiderable speed, hit the edge of the lake which formed a kind of miniature ramp, fly through the air for a few yards and skid to a halt on the frozen surface of the lake.

Of course, only once we got home and were sat in front of the fire with a steaming cup of cocoa did we realise just how incredibly dangerous the whole process was, and that the ice could have given way at any time, plunging us to a cold and watery death.

Ahh, memories!

I remember sledding with my friend when he broke his arm and dislocated his shoulder after we hit a tree mid-air. It was kinda cool for me 'cause I didn't get hurt but he was fucked up. I used to sled in the woods down this big hill just missing trees, most of the time, or off my friend's roof. I'm surprised I never broke more than a finger. That's what a lot of trippin' out and smoking weed will do on a day off of school.

I'll just have to listen to your sledding stories, as I have none of my own. I live in Florida, and that means two things:

1. Too friggin' hot, which means: No snow. Last time I can remember when it snowed, it was 1989, and my aunt was still living with me. The snowfall was so unusual that we actually taped it.

2. No hills. Maybe you aren't aware of it, but Florida is almost totally flat, with our highest elevation only something like 350 feet. I envy people who live in the mountains.

Growing up in Indiana, playing in the snow encompassed a significant portion of the winter months. Because these activities were taken so seriously, my father invested in a sled similar to the TORPEDO PT BLASTER SLED. It wasn't as colorful, but man did that thing move. (It had a steering wheel)
Every time we'd go to the park to hit the hills, all the children would envy his sled. They would ask me to ask my father if they could give it a try. I would say, "No. You'll break it. It cost more than your life."
Seriously. I would say that.
During the summer months he hung it way up high on the beams in the garage so we wouldn't play with it. We ended up breaking the seat cushion off. For a couple years after that you couldn't sit down as it was just a frame. It hurt like a motherfucker when it jarred your ass, but it was still fun.
A couple years later we broke off the front ski while in tow of a BMX going down the alley and hitting garbage cans from the sled with a baseball bat.
My dad still beats me when he sees me for what I did to his sled.

Awesome piece Rog. Thanks for the memory.

Totally, whenever I am getting embarrassingly aroused by the local snow bunnies in their figure higging burkas, my shit plastic sled can be a godsend! It never fails to slide off to the side wilderness and crash into a snowbank, effectively sending cakes of snow into my coveralls and mercily cooling my white hot loins.
Then I can focus to impress the hotties when my snow-packed manhood is at rest, and hop onto my flexible flyer, slide down the hill at warp-speed, and demolish a few pedestrians into bits with its terrific steering! When the fire tracks go out, I get to see them fleeing in terror as I walk back up the hill.

in the mountain of arizona, all the people up there had log truck iner-tubes, witch are HUGE. you could fit a family of 5 on one of those eazy. the only thing that sucked about them is that big ass hole in the middle, so you had to keep you ass up in the air. and if you went face first, and hit a big bump, it would knock the air out of you. good times....

Where I live, there is only 1-2 inches of snow every year, almost impossible for sledding. But every time it snows, the whole town shuts down and no one goes to work or school. Sometimes the snow melts the very second it touches the ground but still no one considers leaving their homes and the schools are closed for a day or two.

One time, I was sledding at Bryan Park, and on that steep road entrance/exit thing, I watched some guy go spread eagle right into a telephone pole. He was on one of those plastic saucers, and the thing shot out from under him when he hit the pole. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but I decided to laugh, cause watching people crush their testicles is hilarious.

Speaking of slamming into things, we used to sled down a steep hill on lunch trays. It was really steep though, so alot of people ran right into the school and one kid got a concussion so we can't do that anymore.

My brother and I had the snow tubes for a while (before they got recalled).

We had a few dangerous wipe-outs -- my brother hit a tree if I remember correctly. But still: FUN

GT Snowracers are the best sled in the world, especially when you put ski wax on the bottom. Of course, I live in Canada, what the hell else is there to do here in the winter.

By the way, its -50 with the wind chill again! In case you don't know how cold that is, C and F are equal somewhere in the -40's I believe. Merry Christmas!
