i'm going back...again. getting some prereqs out of the way and i'm finally doing the nursing thang. i work at the cleveland clinic and they need nurses so badly that they are willing to pay for me to become an rn. my goals follow:

get my rn
get my bsn
get my masters
become a midwife.

so if any of you females end up pregnant in about 7 years i'll be more than happy to birth your baby. ok, no...not any of you. you'll have to ask first.

ANYWAYS. i am taking this one step at a time and if i feel like i've had enough after getting my rn then i'll stop there.

any of you OLDER posters going back to school to change careers? i'm going to be 32 this year. i figure i'll have my bsn by the time i'm 35 (fingers crossed) and if i'm lucky and have it in me be a midwife by 40? i know that's kind of a late start, but i have to do something with myself. i'm finding that a lot of people my age don't really have a career. they work, but it's not anything that you can say you are. you know what i mean?

One of my friends from university was 34 when he graduated (he was 30 when he went back to school). He was kinda in the same situation as you... married with a young kid already.

According to him, it's really tough to go back at the start but if you can manage to go full-time it's a lot easier. All your other responsibilities will be competing for your attention, but if you can stay focused it's definitely worth getting a degree.

full time is out of the question for me right now. the prereqs i have to take can be taken online. the actual nursing program is an evening/weekend gig that the clinic has created for people working full time. after i get my prereqs out of the way (which aren't many, because i have about 3 years of college under my belt anyways), i will get my rn in 15 months (associates degree). the clinic then has another bsn program where you get your bachelors in less than a year. so yeah. i wish i could just go full time and get it over with and not have to worry about everything else, but as it stands right now i'm the one with the bigger pay check and to change that would be economic disaster.

There is a middle aged dude in my upper math classes who went to Iraq and he talks really slow and stands up while shes teaching if he feels like hes falling asleep. Also theres a middle aged woman. they both seem to udnerstand all the stuff I dont really get but they also insist on not being let out early and gettign extra homework so i hate them.

Theres a 30 something year old in my computer science courses who has kids and a wife and talks even slower than the math guy and constantly asks questions about advanced stuff we dont need to know for the course and he gets As on everything so I hate him too bc he fucks up my curve.

Some young whipersnapper is gonna hate you is what I'm sayin. rest assured.

Also it is Finals week. Are you ready for the stress of Finals? Because I took a sleeping pill last night and I'm still groggy so I drank 4 cups of coffee and now Im both groggy and hyper and reading two notecards at a time to challenge my brain bc/ I have 20 proofs and 10 analytical calculus techniques to memorize and it sucks.

Hooray fer lernin! Good move GB...I am sure it wont be easy being a Mom and going back to school and all, But I bet you it will be worth it. I certainly gained a hell of a lot by going back and getting my MA at age 30. And although I was the oldest in the class by several years, they only thought I was a bit weird.

The nursing shortage is severe enough you'll be able to hold out for all sorts of perks, even along the way. Good for you.

I want to make a mid life career change to being wildly famous and then get caught red hnded by the paparazzi doing something unspeakably foul.

captainbubby: calm yourself. you'll do fine. finals week stress is nothing compared to staying up all night trying to calm a screaming, puking child who can't tell you when he is about to throw up and not being able to call off work the next day because you are in orientation time and doing so could jeapordize your career at the only place in town worth staying at for more than a year. oh and then there is the fight with your husband about who is right about what to do with the kid when it comes to giving advil or tylenol or the happy cold liquid stuff that isn't technically for puking but puts the kid to sleep for a solid 12 hours WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY WHAT HE NEEDS SHUT UP SHUT UP I'M TIRED WHY DON'T YOU ROLL OVER ON YOUR "GOOD" EAR AND PRETEND WE AREN'T HERE LIKE YOU'VE BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST 5 HOURS OR SO.

aherm.

thanks, dole. i remember you finishing up school and how stressed you were and also how happy you were that you had completed it. i wanna be proud of myself like that.

and max, i work at the clinic in the staffing department and i see first hand how much we need nurses. the icu rns in our float pool call whenever they want to work and request that they get premium pay. 9 times out of 10 they get it, no questions asked. that's about $35-$40/hour. i could work 2 12 hour shifts and bring home almost as much as i do now working 40 hours. that gives me more time with my son. that makes me happy.

Good for you.

I actually concidered going back to school for nursing for just that reason. It sure pays better than the museum thang.

BUT. I have no desire to do nursing, particularly. So it's famousness school for me.

Good for you doing the nursing thing. I'm starting nursing school in the fall it took me the past year to get most of the general requirements and then I had to test to get into the program, and it's still going to take me another 2 years to get my RN because of the way they space out the classes. So, if you can get it paid for and get it within 15 months thats a good deal. I too have a child, he's 2 1/2 and a pain in the ass. So, as far as going back to school with a little kid, yeah it's hard, but if it will benfit the both of you, which it will, then it's all worth it in the end.

I originally went to school for graphic design, but the nursing feild is a much better option when you consider the need for them and the pay rate.

Going back myself. Getting a BS in biology and, if I can keep my GPA up there and kick some ass on MCAT, still want to go to med school. Allowed myself to be horribly sidetracked over the past... decade and I don't even have a kid to show for it If all goes swimmingly, I will graduate med school at age 35 or so.

There was a really old guy in some of my computer science classes (he must have been like 60 or older). He was really annoying and always tried to ask stupid questions and tell stories about stuff that he did in the '80s.

We didn't have air conditioning in the main computer lab, and on one really hot day he was sitting in there without a shirt on.

all the old people in my classes suck but i dont think any of you guys have to worry about that because you don't suck :O

Achimp pretty much described a large portion of oldpeople/parents in classrooms

I remember in one of my classes this lady would always be flirting with the teacher kind of and she never stopped talking it was weird and it took hours out of our time. Eventually the teacher just started ignoring her when he was lecturing unless she was asking an important question.
In my girlfriends class there was this guy she called Mr. Mom. He always argued and talked about himself in class and said he had a PHD but wanted to become a reporter so he took begining reporting classes with a phd. Anyway, he was called Mr. Mom because one day he got in a huge argument about how women should stay at home and take care of the kids or something and like that and not work and there was a bit of an argument over it and anyway the conversation ended with him saying HE himself stayed at home to take care of the kids so the conversation ended with him yelling (literally yelling in the middle of class), "IM A MR MOM, IM A MR MOM"
he's one of those typical dumb old people who think that, just because they are old, they know more than anyone else.

I'm older, but I'm not old. So when I say an old guy I men in his late 50's.
He was in my writing class and he would always feel the need to overly express himself and talk about his army days.
He did his research on disciplining children.
I sat right in front of him and he would always get up out of his chair in the middle of class and stand against the wall and complain about his back.

That would have been a sight to see if he ever took his shirt of.

that reminds me, Mr. Mom said he was in the Marines and his leg got injured while he was in the marines, so that's why he can't work a normal job.
He worked in the office what people call a pencil pusher, I guess. Stupid liar. He probably has his phd in secretarial studies.

Glowbelly! You can help me give birth when i have my kids. (don't worry, that's not anytime soon!!!)

I am so happy for u. My aunt is a nurse (even tho i think she works w/ dialysis and stuf like that) and she can get a job wherever she wants (in fact she's in california right now and is coming to MD next month). She's always telling me to be a nurse cause there's a shortage and all.

Too bad for her i'm gonna be a veteranarian (if i can eva learn to spell it).

I'm only in 10th grade right now but next i'm gonna start taking the college classes they offer at my high school so if i get some credits outta the way i can graduate college earlier.
Which is great cause me and george were adding it up and i'm gonna be in school till my early 30s or late 20s (hopefully the latter).

I think it's fantastic when anyone has the guts to make a major life change. Congrats on the decision.

I'm an education junkie with 11 years of post grad studies. Degrees in Funeral Services, Culinary Arts and Advertising. University degrees in Classical Studies and Theology. Maybe teacher's college next year or going into real estate.

Burbank, what did you graduate from, museum studies?
