Old Jun 14th, 2003, 04:17 PM        Name Meanings
Give me a name, and I will tell you the origin and the meaning.

For example, my name, Jeanette, is the pet form of the French name "Jeanne". "Jeanne" is the modern French version of "Jehanne", which is the Old French feminine form of "Johannes", which was the Latin form of the Greek name "Ioannes", itself derived from the Hebrew name "Yochanan", meaning, "Yahweh is gracious."

"Roger" is less complicated. It means "famous spear", and it comes from the Germanic elements "hrod" (fame) and "ger" (spear). The Normans introduced this name to Britain.

Who wants me to find the meaning of their name?

I don't recall his name, but a 19th century mathematician coined the term "google" to refer to 10^100. It was his nephew's idea. Likewise, a googleplex is 10^1000.

The way I always remember it, a googol is a 1 with a hundred zeroes, and googolplex is a 1 with a googol zeroes. Is that right?

edit: er, yeah, googol. "google" is probably just a cutesy spelling of it.

I think they just came up with a name, and it happened to be Google. :/

Anyways, my name means "who is like the Lord" or something like that.

Sam is the short form of Samuel. Samuel is from the Biblical name Shemu'el, which means either "Name of God" or "God has heard".

Clayton comes from an Old English surname which was originally from a place name meaning "clay settlement."

I've been dealing with name meanings myself, for my story I'm working on.

What's funny is I picked a few names, and didn't look at the meanings until way down the line. And eerily enough, the meanings have an incredible amount in common with the characters.

Ean I think means God is gracious, or Gracious gift from God. I find it fittingly ironic.

Blaine: A Scottish surname meaning "Servant of Blaan". I don't know what Blaan means. In Irish Gaelic Blaine can mean "thin". Blane can mean "chief" or "leader" in Celtic, that might be it.

Brent: A English surname derived from a place name meaning "hill" in Celtic.

Tucker: An English surname derived from the Old English word "tucian" meaning "folder of cloth."

Rodney: An English surname originally derived from an Old English place name meaning "Hroda's island". Hroda's is a Germanic name that means "fame".

Clifford: An English surname originally derived from a place name meaning "ford by a cliff" in Old English.
