Old Jan 4th, 2004, 05:39 AM        Gayest. Video. Ever.
Any of the older Mockers should have at least a passing familiarity with the medium known as "music videos." For you younger folk who have only been watching MTV for the last five or six years, "music videos" were a visual representation of popular songs, and were quite the rage some years back.

At any rate, I was watching Fuse TV, a music video channel that has re-discovered the lost art of billing itself as a music video channel, and actually playing music videos.

The theme of the hour was "Classic Metal" videos. So a video begins with Rob Halford, shirtless, while doing pushups and singing. The rest of Judas Priest, also shirtless, are working out at various exercise machines in the background. The rest of the video consists of them meandering around in various states of undress, particularly at one point, where they are in towels in a sauna. The homoerotic undertones of the video cannot rightly be called "undertones." I've seen subtler gay pride parades.

I just couldn't help but wondering why anyone was surprised when Rob Halford outed himself a couple of years ago, because many people were. I mean, if you saw this video, you'd understand. Compare it to Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." When you saw George Michael frolicking in his tight pink shorts, did you think to yourself, "That's one wood-chopping, Marlboro-smoking, Budweiser-swilling, football-loving man's man right there"? They look more like the Village People than Judas Priest. It's just a trip to see these metal icons in this context. The video's called "Hot Rockin." See if you can find it. It's a hoot. Not so much because of the gayness, but because it makes Toni Basil's "Mickey" look like a VMA winner.
