Right. They were portrayed as realistic, human teenagers. Which made them boring. I'd rather play a game with a one-armed Mr. T wannabe, a neurotic ex-soldier, a foul-mouthed pilot, and a remote controlled cat riding a stuffed Moogle (even though I thought Cait Sith was kind of worthless), all of which have interesting histories, than a bunch of unremarkable kids from a military school.

As for more dislikable characters:
Kiddy Kong
Kara from Illusion of Gaia (and that whiny kid whose name I forgot)
Wirt from Diablo
Baby Mario
The bird guy from Battletoads who makes fun of you when you die
The old guy from Super Punch-Out!!! who gets to fight with a stick
Gestahl from Secret of Mana - you had to fight him like four times but he was never tough, never did anything badass, and was completely pointless

Krythor That cocky prick double agent in Area 51 on Perfect Dark.

"Pantyhose," some bald midget guy from a SNES beat 'em up that I can't remember the name of right now. He was too small to hit, so you had to crouch. What a cunt.

The Boo's in Super Mario World.

Those asshole monsters in Legend Of Zelda for the NES that grabbed you and took you back to the start of the dungeon.

Johnny Cage.

HickMan Slippy the Toad. He can't do one thing in the game. He had no point aside from when he makes stuff. But he can't fly an R-wing worth shit.

Zomboid I agree with the spiders in blood but what scared me even more than those fucking things were the hands that you can''t get off you. I hate them so much

I also hate that raiden guy even though I've never played MGS because the only real raiden will always be the one from the MK series

gogo

tingle was cool in a scary creepy 'he is going to hump you in your sleep' kinda way.

characters i hate:

fook-san (spelling - shenmue: scaaaary person, smiles like an idiot 24 hours a day

Amy in sonic adventure 1+2 : i like playing as her in sonic advance, mainly because YOU CANT HEAR HER WHINE!

the spiders in the pc game 'blood' : im not arachnaphobic, but these fuckers creeped the living hell out of me. this video game related fear of spiders passed on to thief, but not as much.

yeah, but it was kinda kool that u gotta see snake in the 3rd person. if he was 1/8th the badass snake was everyone would like him more...

He gave you all kinds of cools stuff in SMB3, like the Tanoki suit

Schimid Yes, but all that time he was just waiting and training for the day to beat your ass in Mario Kart.

Admit it. You're just mad because he got that triple mushroom to come in first right before the finish line.

CaptainBubba EVERYONE in Chrono Cross.

Zero character development.

timrpgland The main thing I didn't like about Raiden was the way he acted. He was a whiner and a pussy. Still, he wasn't all that bad. The game itself was good and you do hang out with Snake alot so it wasn't that big of a deal but alot of us would just rather play as Snake (the story would need to be different if that were the case). It's that simple. A ballsy move like that doesn't always sit well with expecting fans. Metal Gear = Snake. Not controlling him for most of the game was just wrong.

With 8, I felt annoyed by most of the characters. Their personalities weren't as out there as 7 but that is one thing I didn't like about 8. It was boring. Most of the characters were all around 18 years old and I didn't like the 90210ish type feel the characters had. It just wasn't right. It felt all poppy while FFVII was all gritty.

Comrade Rocket I despise Tingle. I want to punch him in the head. I almost didn't get wind waker because he was in it. At least nintendo was smart and toned down his crappyness. He still sucked and drains you all of your rupees.

And I don't see why people hate Raiden so much. I can understand the disappointment when you find out you don't get to play as Snake the whole time. But it was a ballsy move on Kojima's part, and one that opened up a lot of potential good stories for future installments (if they're made).

SLjimbo He wasn't that bad in SMB 1-3, but he sucked in Mario Kart 64 and Mario Party.

Schimid Every Kong except for Donkey was a fucker. :/

And Toad is awesome.

Rongi I hated FF8's characters. There was a whiny little teenager, his rival, the girl who resists you in the beggining but after about 80 hours of game play you finally get her, his 'clever' teacher, and other forgetable characters.

But that's just me

Personally, I liked the characters in FF7. Not all of them, but most of them.

I also have to agree with Zidane. Fucker looked like the missing Olsen twin, with a tail.

And I hate Dixie Kong too. I don't know what Rare was smoking when they thought we'd like to play as a little girl-monkey who flies places by swishing her hair around. That hair was the biggest bullshit ever. Apparently her arms are too weak so she picks stuff up with her hair.

SLjimbo MGS2's Raiden definitely tops my list. Kojima made a too risky move of placing Raiden over Snake in most of MGS2.

Other characters I loathe:

Toad (SMB)
Everyone in Dark Cloud 2 (thank god I rented this, the game was too irritating to play)
That ostrich from Donkey Kong Country
Selphie (FF8)
Golem (Chrono Trigger)
Mr. Dream (Damn replacement for Mike Tyson in Punch-Out)

Bennett I always hated the main character from Duck Hunt (not the dog). I'd usually end up crying in the corner of the room with the light zapper in my mouth...

...and Mario. I don't know why, but I never liked him very much. and also Barbie from Hoops.

No, the story made the game work.

-Umaro from Final Fantasy 6 (3 US). I just don't fucking care for characters I can't control.
-With his items, he is pretty damn tough. Especially when you bring him to the Fanatics Tower.

Raiden < Snake, that is the only reason he gets flak.

Some hated characters:
Zidane (FFIX)
Crash Bandicoot
Black Heart (vs series)
Edward (FFIV)
Gestahl (FFVI)
Baldwin (OB 64)
Diddy Kong
Alucard (only in Castlevania III though)
