No, the story made the game work.

James: I don't see how anyone can make the argument that FFVIII has better characters than FFVII. Anyway, the characters in FFVI will always be the best.

-Umaro from Final Fantasy 6 (3 US). I just don't fucking care for characters I can't control.

-With his items, he is pretty damn tough. Especially when you bring him to the Fanatics Tower.

Raiden < Snake, that is the only reason he gets flak.
