It was an anime. Just like Transformers (Generation 1), Thundercats, and the Real Ghostbusters (The original), it was animated by Japanese Animation Company, but the story development was made in NA.
As for me, I don't watch as much anime as those so-called "Otaku", I try to limit anime I watch to mecha and classroom kings who form an army of shit.
