In the world of mario, the pixels that make up his HAT are inactive, so wrenches and other shit being thrown at you can appear to go through the hat.

It had to start hitting the actual HEAD to do damage.

I read this in a book on Super Mario World. I guess it works in 3 as well.

He did cheat though. He's blatantly using a turbo controller.
