". . .the Greeks were slaves to the Romans, and so on."

There was nothing selective about Roman slavery practices, Greeks were slaves, but so were Germans, Numidians,Samnites, Jews and anyone else whom look interesting or useful. The Romans even had a dedicated court in order to ensure the rights of slaves -For a Roman slave was not truly a second class citizens. They could own property, they could own their own slaves, and recieved payment from their masters which, if they so desired, they could place into their peculium - a sort of trust account which could be used to buy their freedom. In fact, some slaves became famous Roman citizens, purchising not only citizenship but the broad stripe as well, becoming members of the Senate. Hoorah Rome!

They were centuries more civilized then than any country currently in existance.
