Right now, you've complicated the friendship. I think it's important for you to talk to him, and figure out how he feels, and how you feel. A great intimate relationship is one where you can have a friend in the other person, and you already have that with him. So the only change would be adding intimacy to the friendship, and it's up to both of you to decide how you feel about doing that.

Oh, and cheers to you for knowing when to call it quits. I have to give credit to someone who can say something didn't feel right, and wanting something sexual to also be something special.
