A Similar situation happened with me and my older sister. When I was going through puberty I had a shitty mustache, and didn't know how to shave, so it stayed. Whenever females sarcastically commented "nice mustache!" I'd say "you too." Haha.

Well my older sister said it to me and I responded the same way. The thing was, she really DOES have a mustache. She has kind of an issue with body hair. So my other sister was on my case telling me I should appologize, because she overheard my older sister, whose feelings were really hurt. How does one appologize in a situation like that? It's like "Hey, sorry you really do have the face of an ape!"

But anyway, I'm not looking for any advice really, I'm just telling stories.
