I just saw on the History Channel that Tesla was asked by the American Government to create, for lack of a better name, a death ray. The one he thought up was strong enough to destroy a city, but in reality the one that was going to be made was smaller. He also came up with an idea for planes that fly on radio waves and not gas. He even went so far as to build a huge radio tower, but he ran out of money before he could test it.
