you're actually supposed to get the impression of paying that person to teach you a spell. which makes more sense to me than just spontaneously learning it while standing next to other people who're killin birds an butterflies an junk. but on the other hand, almost everythin in those games requires a hefty suspension of reality, who is anyone to nitpick. :O

i may only like ff1 because it was my first rpg. i liked its screwed up story an makin different parties an takin spellcasters in different directions n such.
