There's gotta be a hell of a lot more no one is talking about. The girl was old enough to know that being gone from home that long was messed up. Even if the guy was faking having heard from her mom and dad and giving her fake letters from them saying they were happy she was doing "God's work" or whatever this pervert was into, she still should have realized that it wouldn't be too much to speak to her parents on the phone.
