The throwing away bread crumbs is a symbolic emptying of your larder, ie. disposing of regrets, cleansing your soul, etc.
The apples and honey are your hopes for a sweet new year. They didn't have candy back then. And Cordie rejects sweetness spontaneously.
The nuts re becaue I'm going to be as nuts next year as this year and there's not a damn thing that can be done about it.
