I haven't heard much about AVG. I think they provide a free standalone virus checker, not an installable version. Basically, you run it whenever you think there's something wrong.
If you want a free resident scanner, try Panda's or the Nod32 one (my favorite, but you have to keep uninstalling/installing).
I personally use McAfee VirusScan for free (provided to me by an employer). I'd see if your school or work offers you a free home version, or if you can leech one from someone you know.
