The army gives poor people jobs. Why should we want rich kids to join the army and take jobs away from people unqualified to do anything else? The army offers employment opportunities and people aren't forced to join it. If anything, we should all be supporting a draft which will at least put some randomization into who gets sent off to war. Of course the rich may, and probably will, avoid it through post-secondary education, but at least it will make everyone who just "doesn't care much about the war" pay attention. If a draft is instated at least a majority of Americans will be at stake and the war might mean something to more than a fraction of the population.
