Well, yeah, there are hawkish Dems. Just like there are anti-war conservatives. The problem is that one party (the GOP) knows how to present a coherent, consistent message, and the other does not.
When the author calls Fukuyama Left of Hillary, he's basically just talking messaging and politics. Hillary supported the war, she has supported every Iraq spending bill in the Senate. But then she will criticize Bush's "handling" of the war, harp on WMDs, etc. etc.
It is silly to compare the two. One is a U.S. Senator with bigger responsibilities, and the other is just an academic. A good one, but still just that. He can afford to be as Left as he wants.
Back to Fukuyama and liberalism-- It's all about perception. You say Liberal, and people think soft, anti-military, weak on terror. Of course there are exceptions, and of course it wasn't always this way, but Fukuyama needs to defend himself against perceptions, not reality.
