I think what Slinky's trying to say is that it isn't marriage, but that it is being paraded as if it is. That legal rights for gay couples cheapen marriage because they are the same in everything but name. Perhaps i'm reading too much into it, but it sounds like you're saying giving gay people this ersatz marriage will devalue it not because you're sharing the privilege with gay people, but because you're giving them a shallow imitation where just extending the ceremony to them would have sufficed. Because, strictly speaking, It isn't actually a marriage, but a 'civil partnership'. At least that's how I understand it, because otherwise Slinky is just a PREJUDICED HETEROBIGOT.
